RAYONG, 20 November 2016 – The first-ever pylon race in the history of Asia was a resounding success. Utapao Airport proved to be a perfect location to host the race and plenty of ultra-exciting air racing was enjoyed by thousands of fans and some of the country’s most influential dignitaries.
Air Race 1 Thailand was held on 19-20 November 2017 at Utapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport in the eastern of Thailand
Justin Phillipson of No Strings Attached (Race 79) was the overall winner of this historic race, winning in the pivotal race of the weekend by just six one hundredths of a second ahead of Phillip Goforth of Knotty Girl (Race 69) in a photo finish that kept everyone guessing until the referees confirmed.
French pilot, Stanislas Damiron, who jumped in to fly Des Hart’s Chaos Theory (Race 3), came in third place followed closely by favorite Steve Temple in Madness (Race 87) nipping at his heels. Justin Meaders, in command of the famous Quadnickel (Race 45) came in 5th place, which was a frustrating turn of events for him having won the previous race the day before in front of new adoring fans.
This was a test event to demonstrate the sport to the Thai people and to ensure that the facilities and professional expertise will be in place for next year’s Air Race 1 World Cup at the same venue. The Air Race 1 was pleased to confirm the venue and all organizing partners indeed have been successful in every aspect of the event and have been officially authorized as an Air Race 1 venue fully capable of running this discipline of motorsport known as formula one air racing.
The many thousands of spectators for this test event furthermore convinced Air Race 1 and its partners that the event will be a great success in future years and everyone is looking forward to a long partnership. Thank you to all the Air Race 1 partners and teams!
